Crozer-Chester Medical Center has been actively involved in cancer research for the past three decades. The physicians of the Crozer Regional Cancer Center – which is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as a Comprehensive Teaching Hospital – oversee these research efforts.
Research endeavors include clinical trials dealing with prevention and treatment of cancer. Clinical trials are state-of-the-art research studies using medicines, radiation therapy, surgery and/or other treatments. There are many kinds of trials, ranging from ways to prevent and treat cancer to studying the psychological impact of cancer. All major advances in cancer care are the result of clinical research.
In addition to Phase I clinical trials generated by Fox Chase Cancer Center for Fox Chase Network, Crozer Regional Cancer Center patients can participate in a range of Phase II and III trials. CRCC patients participate in studies coordinated by several national cancer research groups, including the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), the National Surgical Adjuvent Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). A CRCC oncologist is an investigator with the National Cancer Institute and its Cancer Trials Support Unit.
In addition, the CRCC works with pharmaceutical companies to better define the role of various targeted agents in cancer therapy. Gynecologic oncology has a basic scientific research lab to study the molecular and genetic aspects of gynecologic tumors.
The consistent increase in cancer research activities reflects the cancer center’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art care to our community today and defining the standards of care for tomorrow.
