Proactive Energy Program (PEP)

Fatigue is one of the most common complaints of people diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors. To better understand and manage the complex factors that can lead to fatigue in people with cancer, the Crozer Regional Cancer Center offers the Proactive Energy Program (PEP).

PEP’s goal is to help people regain the energy they had before cancer, allowing them to lead more active and fulfilling lives. Because multiple factors contribute to the loss of energy, Crozer cancer professionals have determined that managing it requires a team approach focusing on three main areas: emotional support, physical conditioning, and nutritional counseling. A patient may require treatment in all three of these areas, or just one.

Each person’s participation in PEP is unique. A team that includes a behavioral health specialist, a physiatrist (physical medicine expert) and a nutritionist evaluates each patient and creates a customized plan to help them increase their energy. Tailored to the individual, these treatment plans may include counseling, exercise or physical therapy, and dietary advice. All treatment sessions are held at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, but monitoring and treatment continue at home as well. A patient should receive a referral from his or her oncologist to be evaluated for PEP.
