For people who may be at risk for developing cancer, Delaware County Regional Cancer Center offers a comprehensive prevention program called Prevention And Risk of Cancer Assessment, or PARCA. Started by a group of Crozer-Keystone health professionals, PARCA provides you with cancer prevention strategies, including an initial risk assessment, periodic re-evaluation of your changing cancer risk and advances in medical knowledge gained from our medical resources.
Risk factors that may increase your chance of developing cancer include personal habits, health history, genetic factors and environment. The PARCA program, which first assesses your risk factors using a detailed personal and family history, also includes:
-
Recommending risk reduction strategies
-
Encouraging appropriate health screenings
-
Providing genetic counseling and genetic testing
-
Providing entry into research programs and chemoprevention trials such as the STAR breast cancer prevention study
Our genetic counselors are uniquely trained to provide information about the role heredity plays in causing cancer, and will support you in your decisions about genetic counseling.
Who benefits from PARCA?
-
Individuals who want to learn how to lower their cancer risk
-
People who want to learn how to detect cancer early
-
Parents and their children concerned about their family history of cancer
-
Patients diagnosed with cancer or precancerous conditions.
