Endoscopic ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool for patients with tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and bile ducts.
Endoscopic ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the wall of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, as well as structures near the gastrointestinal tract. Similar to standard endoscopy, a flexible instrument is passed into the patient's digestive tract. However, in addition to obtaining photo images, ultrasound waves create pictures of wall layers as well as adjacent organs, blood vessels and lymph nodes. Abnormalities can be sampled safely and easily.
