Physicians perform amniocenteses for women who are at increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities. This includes women who are over 35 years old at the time of delivery or who have had an abnormal maternal serum screening test, which indicates an increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities.
During an amniocentesis, physicians obtain a small sample of amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb to help them diagnose a possible disorders. An amniocentesis is generally performed on women during the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy
