Upland, Pa. - Jane Dorval, M.D., a physiatrist with a wealth of clinical and administrative experience, recently joined the Crozer-Chester Medical Center medical staff as chief of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Before coming to Crozer, Dorval was the Medical Director and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Quality Oversight at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital, which consists of multiple locations in the Lehigh Valley and eastern Pennsylvania. Simultaneously, she served as Division Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown for 12 years. Prior to her appointment at Good Shepherd, she practiced for 11 years at Moss-Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia, where she was appointed Medical Director for the last four years of her tenure.
Dorval earned her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, and a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
“Dr. Dorval is extremely well-qualified for her new role at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, and we are glad to welcome her into our community,” says Joan K. Richards, chief operating office of Crozer-Keystone Health System and president of CKHS Hospitals. “Because physical medicine and rehabilitation reaches into many areas, patients from throughout Crozer-Chester Medical Center will benefit from her broad-based experience.”
As a physiatrist, Dorval specializes in diagnosing and treating functional problems that result from musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Conditions commonly treated by physiatrists include stroke, low back or neck pain, multiple sclerosis, amputations, cancer, burns, work injuries, congenital disabilities, cardiac/pulmonary conditions, and brain and spinal cord injuries.
Dorval’s specific areas of interest include caring for adults with spina bifida and other developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, as well as caring for burn patients and cancer patients. She believes in a patient-centered, team approach to rehabilitative care.
“Our department’s main objective is to work closely with our patients to reinstitute dignity and to set functional goals for recovery, as well as to assist them in reaching those goals,” she says. “Every contact we have with our patients should make a difference. When they leave us, they should be able to function at a higher level and as independently as possible. They should have realistic hopes and plans for the future.”
Dorval says that one of the primary reasons she was drawn to Crozer was because it is a tertiary care hospital with comprehensive services. She aims to enhance the integration of rehabilitative medicine into care for Crozer’s varied patient population — from those with fractures, back and neck pain to those with strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, congenital conditions, burns and cancer.
“I was impressed by the quality and depth of the many programs at Crozer, as well as the ease with which the professionals work together. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues throughout the entire Crozer-Keystone Health System,” Dorval says.
Dorval has also been actively involved in a number of national organizations dedicated to rehabilitation. She is the former Chair (2002) of the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), which sets quality standards and accredits more than 38,000 human services programs throughout the world.
In addition, Dorval has served in leadership positions with the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Spina Bifida Association of America, and the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Dorval as part of our medical leadership team. We expect that she will have an extremely positive impact on the physical medicine and rehabilitation services we provide to our patients at Crozer,” says Joe Saunders, chief operating officer of Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Crozer-Keystone vice president.
Dorval’s office is located on the ground floor of Crozer. She can be reached at (610) 874-2501.
