The event was sponsored by the Public Education Campaign Committee of Crozer-Keystone’s Healthy Start program.
Chester, Pa. - The Public Education Campaign Committee of Crozer-Keystone’s Healthy Start program hosted “Infant Safety is Everybody’s Business,” an educational workshop about preventing childhood deaths, accidents and injuries. The workshop was held on May 15 at Community Hospital, 2600 W. Ninth St. in Chester.
The free workshop was attended by over 50 professionals who provide services to women and families with young children, including social workers, case managers, outreach workers, teachers, guidance counselors, school nurses, family service workers and family support workers. The workshop covered a range of topics on the subject of infant and childhood safety, including car safety; SIDS prevention and sleeping safety; fall prevention; the dangers of smoking and sun exposure; pet safety; and lead poisoning.
The program began with a presentation from Fredric Hellman, M.D., Delaware County Medical Examiner entitled “Medicolegal Investigation of Child Abuse.” Two panel presentations were also part of the program. The panels featured a broad range of health care and social service professionals. The first presentation covered physical health and addressed topics such as nutrition and feeding as well as immunizations and check-ups. The second panel discussed fire safety, car seat safety, medication safety, second hand smoke and poisoning.
Between talks, attendees had the opportunity to speak with presenters and view exhibits by community organizations offering additional information and resources.
