Springfield, Pa. – After five races, 10 months and 15.5 miles, the HealthplexÒ Sports Club announced the winners of the first annual Delco Race Series at the conclusion of the fifth race, the Seventh Annual Running of the Monk, on June 8.

The series, which is a partnership between the HealthplexÒ and five local 5K road races, began in the fall of 2006 as a way to promote the healthy benefits of running through means of a free and friendly competition. Participants accumulated points based on their finish time at each race. HealthplexÒ organizers deemed the participants with the highest cumulative total at the end of the last race as the overall winners. The series also awarded participants prizes at the end of each race, as well as a grand prize for the overall winners of the series.

The top three overall male finishers were Matt Mowrer of Drexel Hill with a total of 828 points; Jerry Ianucci of Ridley Park with a total of 820 points; and John Horn of Drexel Hill with a total of 810 points.

The top three female overall finishers were Beth Terry of Clifton Heights with a total of 559 points; Joy Oakey of Media with 329 points; and Jen Buschman of Norwood with 200 points.

Both Mowrer and Terry won $300 and a six-month membership to the HealthplexÒ. The HealthplexÒ also recognized the top finishers in several other age categories, and awarded the winners with $50 and a one-month membership to the club. For a complete listing of the final standings and category winners, go to www.healthplex.net.

In addition to the Seventh Annual Running of the Monk, the Delco Races Series included the following races:

  • Sept. 30, 2006: Eagle National Bank 5K Run/Walk at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Drexel Hill
  • Oct. 15, 2006: Greater Springfield Business Association 5k Run/Walk, Springfield
  • Dec. 10, 2006: Reindeer Romp, Havertown
  • May 6, 2007: Safe from the Sun, Villanova

Hoping to build on the nearly 50 participants involved in this past race series, the HealthplexÒ will gear up for its second year starting on Sept. 29, with the Eagle National Bank 5K Run/Walk at DCMH. The entire schedule for the upcoming race series will be finalized soon and information will be posted on www.healthplex.net.
