Healthplex Sports Medicine Institute to
Again Provide Medical Oversight for Triathlon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2007

Springfield, Pa. - For the third straight year, the physicians of the Healthplex Sports Medicine Institute will serve as medical directors of the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park in June.

More than 2,000 male and female athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic-distance event, which includes a 10-kilometer run, a 40-kilometer bicycle race, and a 1.5-kilometer swim. The athletes will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money in this year’s triathlon, which is officially sanctioned by USA Triathlon.

“We are pleased and honored to be chosen again as medical directors of the triathlon. It continues to grow each year in both size and prestige. We’re looking forward to another great event,” said Steven Collina, M.D., Healthplex Sports Medicine physician.

As medical directors, Collina and his colleagues will be responsible for overseeing a team that will attend to the immediate health care needs of the triathlon participants.

“The event attracts world-class athletes competing at a very high level. The athletes can face dehydration, orthopedic injuries and trauma,” Collina says.

As in past years, they will oversee a main medical tent as well as several satellite tents. In addition to Healthplex Sports Medicine physicians and fellows, the medical team will include nurses, EMTs, paramedics, lifeguards and volunteers.

Besides the main Olympic-length race, a shorter “sprint race” will be held on June 23, as well as a “kids fun run” and “kids duathlon.”

The Healthplex Sports Medicine Institute provides non-operative care to those who experience any injury, pain or medical condition that prevents them from attaining goals with sports, recreational or occupational activities. The physicians have experience working with athletes of all ages and skill levels. They have served as medical directors of the Keystone State Games for more than 10 years, have helped to train Olympic athletes in several sports, and serve as the team physicians for several local high schools. In addition, they oversee the Crozer-Keystone Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.
