The Surgery Center at Brinton Lake Continues
to Expand Ambulatory Surgery Offerings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2008

GLEN MILLS - The Surgery Center at Brinton Lake, located at the Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake in Glen Mills, allows patients to have a range of surgeries in an outpatient, non-hospital setting. General surgery, knee replacements, hernia repairs, pain-management surgery, cosmetic surgery, knee and shoulder arthroscopies and much more are all performed at the Center.

Since its grand opening two years ago, the surgery center has expanded to include 36 practicing surgeons. Each day, anywhere from 10 to more than 50 procedures are performed.

“In addition to providing a very efficient and safe place to have your surgery, our patients also benefit from our individualized care and relaxing surroundings,” says Gina Espenschied, R.N., B.S.N., CNOR, director of nursing at The Surgery Center at Brinton Lake.

With granite, mahogany and polished steel accents, the building is architecturally beautiful, and the reception areas are thoughtfully equipped with televisions, free wireless communication, and coffee service to enhance the comfort of people who are waiting for their loved one or friend who is having surgery.

“One of the main reasons people choose to have surgery at an ambulatory surgery center is convenience,” says Espenschied. “Our patients arrive just 30 to 60 minutes prior to their surgery time and they are immediately pre-registered. Next, they and their companion are escorted through one door to the preoperative area, where they meet their operating room nurse and the anesthesiologist. Minutes later, they go through one more door to the operating room.”

Because the center is focused on just one type of patient care — surgery — there is very little turnaround time between procedures, which means no long waits for the patient and family.

“We have found that patient recovery times are actually shorter in an ambulatory surgery center like ours,” adds Espenschied. “We provide our patients with a lot of personalized care and education. When patients are better educated about their procedure, they tend to have decreased pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety and, therefore, recovery time.”

Each of the Center’s four state-of-the-art operating rooms feature the latest surgical equipment and technology. And the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and staff bring with them the highest levels of credentials and experience. In fact, the average nurse has 15 years experience, and the surgeons and anesthesiologists are board certified.

“We are just as safe as a hospital-based surgery center,” says Adam Hauser, M.D., anesthesiologist and medical director of the Surgery Center at Brinton Lake. “We have the required emergency procedures in place, our equipment is checked on a daily basis, and our nursing staff is trained to handle both adult and pediatric emergencies.

“Patient safety is our primary concern. Patients who are super morbidly obese, or those who have severe liver, lung, or heart disease may not be good candidates for surgery at an outpatient surgical center because they have an increased chance of having to spend the night in the hospital,” Hauser adds. “In the rare instance when we have a complication, we have agreements with the local hospitals to arrange for patient transfers.

“Most people have at least a little anxiety when they are having surgery. Our goal has been to make this Center the ultimate, quick, convenient, and comfortable outpatient surgical experience. Our patients have been pleasantly surprised at how easily they get through the experience and how soon they are back home,” Hauser says. “If you, or a loved one, needs surgery, talk to your primary care physician about having your procedure at an outpatient surgery center.”
