Chester Youth Empowerment Summit to Focus on Violence Prevention, Peer Pressure and More

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 2008

CHESTERThe Chester Youth Collaborative and the office of Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green will co-host the third Chester Youth Empowerment Summit, “Flip the Script, Stop the Violence” at Widener University on May 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event hopes to expand upon the success of the last two summits, which attracted hundreds of residents in the tri-state area.

This year’s summit will offer a range of workshops addressing topics such as violence prevention, conflict resolution, career development, peer pressure and more. Organizers hope the summit will inspire youth to bring about positive changes in their lifestyle choices, their communities and their schools. This year’s event will also provide young people with resources that serve as alternatives to high-risk behavior and encourage youth to become more actively involved in their communities.

In addition to the workshops, several other exciting events are planned for the summit, including:

  • A keynote address by Pastor Lee Everett, Jr.
  • A talent showcase with a performance by Chester’s own “Young Chief”
  • Special appearances by Nathan “Donut” Corbett and Thuliso “ Kenard” Dingwall from the HBO television show “The Wire”
  • Exhibitors from a range of community partners including CityTeam Ministries, Chester Weed & Seed, Mothers in Charge and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.

The summit is open to youth ages 12-22, as well as interested adults. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Onsite registration for the event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Widener’s University Center.

The Chester Youth Collaborative works to strengthen and support out-of-school youth programs serving youth who reside in the city of Chester. The vision of the collaborative is to build a “strong Chester community in which all youth reach their full potential and transition successfully into adulthood.” For more information on the summit and to learn how you can get involved in the CYC, contact Ieasa Nichols at 610-497-7422 or ieasa.nichols@crozer.org,
