Springfield Hospital Celebrates Opening of
New Emergency Department

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 2008

Participating in a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of the new Springfield Hospital Emergency Department are, left to right, Rick Bennett, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Crozer-Keystone Health System; Norman Edmonson, chair of Crozer-Keystone’s Health Services Board; Gwen Smith, president of Springfield Hospital; George Parsons, D.O., director of the Emergency Department; Amy Meehan, R.N., nurse manager of the Emergency Department and Joan Richards, president and chief executive of Crozer-Keystone Health System.

Springfield Hospital has expanded its Emergency Department to meet the needs of the community. The new facility features state-of-the-art technology as well as amenities to make patients’ visits as comfortable as possible.

Springfield’s experienced, skilled team of emergency medicine professionals is proud to treat patients in a renovated and expanded (6,000 square feet, up from 1,900 square feet) facility that features:

  • More patient treatment areas – to allow the Emergency Department to increase its capacity from 12,000 to 22,000 visits per year. The department now features nine private rooms as well as two Fast Track bays, which are used to allow patients with less serious issues to get in and out of the ED quickly.
  • A wireless bedside registration system, which allows patients to lie comfortably while essential information for their care and treatment is entered and processed.
  • A new electronic documentation system that allows hospital staff access to a patient’s records wherever he or she is in the hospital, and also keeps track of previous visits. Electronic bedside registration allows patients to lie in their private room while information is collected.
  • Separate entrances for ambulance and walk-in traffic to ensure that those with the most urgent needs are identified immediately and treated as soon as possible. Walk-in patients and their loved ones can also relax in an expanded waiting area.
  • Separate registration and triage areas that offer complete privacy while sharing personal information.

The new department opened for patients in early November. The hospital held an open house event on Oct. 30 for Springfield Hospital and Crozer-Keystone Health System employees, Crozer-Keystone board members, representatives of local companies and organizations, and local legislators.
