A special “Dining at Dusk” lecture will be held in the Cafeteria at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, One Medical Center Boulevard, Upland, on May 7 at 5 p.m. Join Suzanne Jenkins, R.N., stroke coordinator for Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital, for a comprehensive look at
the signs and symptoms of stroke, treatment options for stroke, and why you should call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is having a stroke. Participants may purchase dinner (including entrée, two sides, fountain drink, bread and dessert) for just $5.30. Stroke risk assessments will be available immediately following the presentation. A Stroke Awareness Day will be held at Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s James E. Clark Auditorium, on Thursday, May 14, from 8 a.m.-noon. The event will feature stroke risk assessments, gait screenings, swallow screenings, carotid screenings, and information on stroke prevention, symptoms and treatment. Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Delaware County Regional Cancer Center, 501 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill: Wednesday, May 20, 8:30-11 a.m. Free cholesterol/glucose screenings will be offered from 8:30-10 a.m. An education session about stroke will be held in the Cancer Center at DCMH at 11 a.m. To register, call (610) 284-8158.
All cholesterol and glucose screenings require fasting. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.
Among those who are more susceptible to stroke are those with high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. You may also be at a higher risk of stroke if you are over 55 years of age, are male, have a family history of stroke, or are African-American.
