Among those leading pediatric care in Crozer’s Emergency Department are, left to right, Bruce Nisbet, M.D., Justin F. Lynn, M.D. and Samir K. Doshi, M.D., FAAP.
Crozer-Chester Medical Center recently began a new pilot program in which a pediatrician is available five days a week – Monday through Friday – to assist and treat children who visit the medical center’s Emergency Department.
“What most people are surprised to find out is that Crozer’s ED treated more than 8,000 children last year. That accounts for more than 20 percent of overall volume of all patients seen in the emergency room,” says Samir K. Doshi, M.D., FAAP, Crozer pediatrician.
Pediatric physicians are currently available in the ED on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 2 to 10 p.m.
Bruce Nisbet, M.D., chairman of Emergency Medicine at Crozer, says, “This program has been very successful and the results have been very positive. The best part of the program is that pediatricians and emergency medicine specialists work together to provide the best care for our pediatric patients.”
Crozer’s Emergency Department, which was extensively renovated in 2006, features six treatment rooms designated for pediatric care in the ED as well as a pediatric waiting room. Crozer also offers a 20-bed inpatient pediatric unit.
“The ED has a great physical layout for kids. The expansion of the ED has opened up an area that is kid-friendly and designed especially for children. We have a waiting area designed just for children, kid-friendly exam rooms and if a patient needs to be admitted, we have a fully staffed 20-bed pediatric unit at the hospital,” Doshi says.
Justin F. Lynn, M.D., M.P.H., Crozer pediatrician, says, “Working in the ED is a rewarding experience. It is important to work with families during what is a stressful time and provide treatment and reassurance as needed.”
Sonia Hulman, M.D., acting chairman of the Pediatrics Department, says, “We are meeting a very major community need. Our goal is to meet the needs of every child who comes into the ER.”
If your child does need to go to the Emergency Department, remember to bring a brief medical history. Some of the items included should be:
· Medications your child is taking
· Allergy information
· History of previous hospitalizations
· List of any previous surgeries and illnesses
· Relevant family history.
The Emergency Department at Crozer-Chester Medical Center is a state-of-the art facility that includes 52 treatments rooms, dedicated trauma and burn care areas, a 64-slice CT scanner, and the latest technologies for patient triage and monitoring. It is staffed by an experienced team of physicians, nurses and other professionals who aim to provide superior emergency care with compassion and understanding.
