Tom Boyd, winner of the 2009 CKHS Senior Idol singing competition, proudly shows off his trophy.
Springfield, Pa. – Tom Boyd of Drexel Hill was recently crowned winner of the third annual Crozer-Keystone Health System Senior Idol singing competition. After taking third place in the first Senior Idol competition, Boyd took a break to come back stronger, more rehearsed, and with a small trick up his sleeve. The judges for the third annual Senior Idol were not prepared for what Tom Boyd had planned: Not only could he sing, but he also played the guitar.
Boyd wooed the crowd as he sung “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a classic that has been recorded by such greats as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and even previous American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. Along with his guitar, Boyd won over the judges and took home first place.
Boyd credits this win to the hard work, dedication and practice he used to prepare for the competition. “I took time off from last year’s competition and worked harder,” he says. In earlier rounds, Boyd played and sang more hits, including “My Prayer” by the Platters, and “Unchained Melody” as sung by The Righteous Brothers.
When asked if he was nervous about performing in front of an audience, Boyd said, “It’s not a phobia for me; it’s really a concentrated effort to play and catch the eyes of the people in the crowd.” Boyd was right at home on the stage as he sang from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. “With the proper rehearsal, you use every muscle in you for a total body feeling,” he says.
“Tom Boyd is an extremely talented man; he sung with tremendous emotion,” says Barbara Looby, MWASC, administrative director of CKHS Senior Health Services. “You can tell he sings because he loves it. It is refreshing to see someone use their talents for a sincere and genuine purpose. When he sings it comes from his soul, and that was evidenced by the tears in the eyes of many in the audience.” Boyd has enjoyed singing since the age of six and Senior Idol won’t be the last stop for his talents. Later this year, Boyd will enter the Pennsylvania State Senior Idol to attempt to reach the finals in Harrisburg.
Senior Idol is an annual singing competition sponsored by the Senior Health Services department of Crozer-Keystone Health System. Health information is also available as part of the event. “It’s a great way to get the active seniors to share their multiple talents with the community,” Looby says. “Senior Idol is a great celebration of gifts, and an opportunity to look at health and wellness above and beyond the services of hospitals.” For more information about Senior Idol, call (610) 338-2720.
