Alcohol, Street Drugs, Party Drugs and Inhalant Abuse, Awareness & Prevention – Discuss alcohol, street and party drugs (including date rape drugs), and inhalant abuse and prevention. Explains short- and long-term effects of drug or alcohol abuse/usage on the body; what body organs are affected and related health problems; and pre-hospital treatment and emergency room treatment for overdoses.  Program is usually provided for students from grades 5th thru 12th. and can be adapted for age specific as needed. Maybe presented in specific parts. i.e., just alcohol, or just inhalant abuse. Also, provide a prescription drug abuse awareness program.  All parts for this program maybe provided to parents for awareness. Contact: Lt. Are you Ready? – Program provides a step-by-step approach to disaster preparedness by walking the student through how to get informed about local emergency plans, how to identify hazards that affect their local area, and how to develop and maintain an emergency communications plan and disaster supplies kit. Other topics covered include evacuation, emergency public shelters, animals in disaster, and information specific to people with disabilities. The program can be delivered at 3 instructional levels; younger children, older children, or adults and can be done in a modular form, addressing specific areas as dictated by the needs of the group. This program was developed by FEMA. Adaptive Equipment for Improved Function and Safety – The latest advances and standards in adaptive self-care, homemaking and vocational interests will be reviewed with many samples available for display. “Better Safe Than Sorry: Injury and Fall Prevention – Preventative measures in reducing accidents and injury. A look at accidental injury, crime among older adults, falls leading to fractures, burns and motor vehicle accidents. How to safe-proof your home and protect yourself from injury. Burn Prevention Education – These interactive classes/exhibits are designed to convey the importance of preventing a burn injury. Age appropriate information is present through various mediums including videos, safety games, lecture, Power Point presentations and discussion. Contact: Gerarda M. Fire and Burn Safety Program for Seniors – This program focuses on common fire and burn hazards encountered by seniors and the appropriate actions needed to avoid or eliminate them. Points of discussion include: Home Hazards, Your Kitchen and Bathroom: Haven or Hazard, Smoke Detectors, fire survival strategies, and Emergency Care of Burns. Contact: Gerarda M. Gun Safety: It’s no Accident – Emergency Nursing Association injury prevention program aimed at reducing the incidence of firearm injury and death. Program is designed to educate and remind parents, children, gun owners and families to take responsibility for and practice gun safety. The community educational program can be presented in age appropriate tracks: School age K-1 (20-30 minutes), 2-3 (35-40 minutes), 4-6 (40-45 minutes), teen (50-60 minutes) and adult (60 minutes). Juvenile Fire setter Education Program – This educational program encompasses an overview discussion of burn prevention, burn injury, risk behavior, and the dangers of fire play and fire setting among children. A graphic Power Point presentation illustrating the consequences of massive burn injury, in conjunction with interactive demonstrations of burn care equipment, is adjusted to the child’s developmental level. The Burn Outreach Coordinator is also available to discuss personalized concerns about fire setting. All information is confidential, and each case is handled on an individual basis. A parent(s) or guardian must attend the program. Contact: Gerarda M. Work-Related Burn Injury Program – This program provides an introduction to the prevention, treatement and rehabilitation of burn injuries. Topics include:

  • Basic introduction to work-related burns.
  • Initial assessment of severity, and how to assess the degree and extent of a burn.
  • Emergency care for a worksite burn injury, including those caused by flash, flame, steam or  scald, contact, chemical, electrical, and inhalation.
  • Wound care for on the job minor burns (optional component for occupational health nurses).
