As part of Delaware County Memorial Hospital’s ongoing efforts to make its facilities more accessible to patients and visitors, the Patient Access department has been moved from its lower level, Medical Office Building location to a more convenient unit on the second floor. Construction has also been completed on the hospital’s spacious new Main Lobby.
The new Patient Access area, which houses Admissions, Outpatient Registration and the Outpatient Laboratory, is located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building, a location that makes it easily accessible to patients and visitors arriving from the DCMH parking garage.
“In order to renovate the Main Lobby, our Admissions area had to be moved,” says William McCune, vice president and chief operating officer of Delaware County Memorial Hospital. “We felt that combining Admissions with Registration would benefit both our patients and our staff. The lobby of the Medical Office Building was realized to be a very convenient and reasonable location for the offices, since the area could then serve as both a registration and information desk for patients and visitors.”
The new area includes:
- Six registration cubicles
- Three blood draw stations
- Seating for 30 patients
- A reception desk
- Two bathroom facilities
All areas of the new department are wheelchair accessible and utilize the same décor as the second-floor corridor.
“We have received a great deal of positive feedback from our patients and visitors, as well as from our staff,” says Sandra Baker, director of DCMH’s Patient Access Department. “The new department creates a breathtaking point of entry for our patients and visitors. It’s open, well lit and well ventilated. Our employees benefit from customized, up-to-date work units, ergonomic amenities and electronic equipment. It’s an exciting change, from a physical as well as an operational standpoint.”
In addition to the Patient Access move, the DCMH business office was moved to an office across the hall to make it more convenient for patients and visitors. In order to create space for the move, the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Public Relations departments were re-located to new offices.
“These moves were important parts of our overall plan to make our public areas more gracious and comfortable for our patients and visitors,” McCune says. “The area is very aesthetically pleasing and is easy to find.”
The goal was the same for the Main Lobby, the final area to be renovated as part of DCMH’s latest construction plan. The lobby was renovated during the months of February and March to make it roomier and more aesthetically pleasing. Among the lobby’s amenities are:
- Gracious waiting areas for patients and visitors
- Visually pleasing lighting and artwork
- A new, conveniently-located Information Desk
- Roomier, brighter restrooms for men and women
- A new handicapped-accessible revolving entrance door
- A renovated, fully-stocked Gift Shop, staffed by members of the United Auxiliaries of the Delco Memorial Foundation
