Springfield Hospital offers an array of inpatient and outpatient services to residents from all over Delaware County. The hospital’s 32-bed facility provides acute-care services, and its skilled team of emergency medicine professionals treats a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. Springfield Hospital admits 1,700 patients and receives over 10,000 Emergency Department visits per year.
“Springfield offers the convenience and friendly service of a community hospital, but as our patients know, we have the staff and facilities to provide advanced inpatient services,” says Gwen Smith, chief operating officer of Springfield Hospital and CKHS vice president.
Acute Care Center
The Acute Care Center is a full-service unit that consists of intensive care, telemetry and general medical/surgical beds. The staff is made up of registered nurses who are trained in critical care and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. The Acute Care Center is committed to delivering personal, quality care to patients and their families.
“Springfield’s Acute Care Center combines the latest technologies with a caring staff to provide our patients with the best experience possible,” says Lisa Schmidt, R.N., nurse manager of the Acute Care Center.
Emergency Department
Springfield’s Emergency Department is always ready to serve the community, providing care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When a patient arrives at the Emergency Department, a triage nurse will determine the nature and extent of his or her injury or illness. The patient is then assigned a primary nurse and emergency doctor.
“The Emergency Department is staffed by physicians and nurses who are specially trained and certified in adult and pediatric emergencies,” says Amy Meehan, R.N., nurse manager for the Emergency Department at Springfield Hospital. “The staff works together as a team to ensure minimal wait times and expedite admissions. Should a patient require a specialized level of care, transport is readily available. Springfield Hospital has a very friendly environment; the staff works together to deliver personal, quality care to patients and their families.”
Surgical Services
Springfield Hospital’s Surgical Services department offers procedures to those admitted on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Springfield l recently upgraded its laparoscopy general surgery equipment for minimally invasive surgery. This type of surgery, used in such procedures as gall bladder removals, usually results in shorter surgical times and better patient outcomes.
Springfield also provides support for a full spectrum of orthopedic procedures – from complete “same-day” orthopedic procedures such as knee arthroscopies to total hip and knee replacements that require an inpatient stay.
Other common procedures at Springfield include treatments for ear, nose and throat (ENT) ailments, such as ear tubes, tonsillectomies, and sinus conditions. Many adult ENT patients are scheduled for FESS (Functional Endoscopy Sinus Surgery) procedures.
“Because we are a small, community hospital, patients really do get very personalized treatment,” adds Janice J. Simons R.N., M.S.N., CNOR, nurse manager of Surgical Services at Springfield Hospital. “From the time that they come through our doors until the time that they leave, patients and visitors are made to feel at home. Our excellent security and volunteer staffs are the people most first contact when they enter the building. The hospital’s staff nurses and technicians are also very courteous and dedicated to helping patients and their families.”
