Whether she’s 18 or 98, proper obstetric and gynecologic care is importance to every woman. Fortunately, women living in Delaware County and beyond have access to the region’s premier maternity services, right in their own backyards, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Delaware County Memorial Hospital.
Recently, Crozer-Keystone Health System added yet another offering to its impressive lineup of GYN services: Jose Maceda, M.D., has joined the health system to provide urogynecologic services for women of all ages.
“Urogynecology is a new field that is recognized by the American Urology Association and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology,” says Dr. Maceda, who practices at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. “We treat what are commonly referred to as ‘pelvic floor disorders,’ such as vaginal prolapse (in which pelvic organs drop to or through the vaginal opening), urinary incontinence (overactive bladder), urinary tract infections and bowel incontinence. Many women are hesitant to speak with their health care providers about these conditions, but they can very seriously affect their quality of life. Fortunately, a range of treatment options are available to significantly improve, and in some cases cure, these conditions.”
Dr. Maceda aims to educate women about their conditions – thereby validating their concerns – and to guide them through the many treatment options available. Depending on the condition, treatment options range from conservative methods, like physical therapy and medications, to surgical procedures.
“Whether it’s because of generational or cultural customs, or just because they can be embarrassing to talk about, many women do not discuss these conditions,” Dr. Maceda says. “However, they can have a serious impact on a woman’s job, family, social life and one-on-one relationships. We want to help them learn as much as they can about these conditions and explore the ways they can deal with them.”
While conditions like urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse are commonly thought to affect only older women, studies show that younger women suffer from them in surprisingly high numbers. Childbirth and menopause are two leading causes of both conditions.
In addition to its new urogynecology services, Crozer-Keystone Health System offers a full slate of obstetrical and gynecologic services. CKHS welcomes more than 3,400 babies into the world each year, and provides gynecologic care for women of all ages.
