Remember Life

We race along the highway

in pursuit of our goals.

We fulfill our hearts desires

at the expense of our souls.

The “How to Succeed” series,

angled on the mantelpiece;

the manual for all we want,

but nothing that we need.

The modern mansion on the hill

provides the perfect view.

But you cannot enjoy it;

there are a million things to do.

Your neighbor waved “Good morning,”

but you really couldn’t see.

Your fifteen percent tint obscured

and kept your privacy.

The shocking news life throws our way

is designed to slow us down.

For us to take our blinders off

and really look around.

But because we are merely human

and we do tend to forget,

God chooses special people

to shock our intellect.

It is by the mercy of our God

that we draw each single breath.

And it’s also at His bidding

that our eyes are closed in death.

We hold no power in our hands,

a sobering thought for sure.

We are but leaves in the wind;

maybe less, but nothing more.

When others become stricken,

it’s the rest of us who cry.

But they’re at peace; their souls are well,

they’ve lived so they can die.

They understood the meaning

of what life’s supposed to be.

They’ve played and loved and lived

and pledged allegiance to country.

Their giving was purely giving

out of caring and concern.

They thought merely of the helping

and not of the returns.

They sometimes gave of nothing,

save an ear or helping hand.

They sometimes gave of everything,

it’s the measure of the man.

The gladness of their spirits

reflects a healthy state of mind.

The essence of their living

leaves impressions on mankind.

That they should suffer in any way

confuses comprehension.

But God chooses special people

to command our attention.

We must pause along the highway

when we’re racing to our goals.

Find renewal for our spirits

and revival for our souls.

Sit out on the patio,

cut the list of things to do.

Hold our loved ones tight and close,

take pleasure in the view.

Speak up for the voiceless;

go the distance with a friend.

Fight for the downtrodden;

it’s what matters in the end.

Speak out against corruption;

lead the charge if you would.

Challenge the establishment;

reject evil for good.

Dance before the masses

like you do when you’re alone.

Cancel the appointments;

for a while turn off the phone.

Take a day off from the office,

take the children out of school.

Laugh out loudly if you must;

now and then defy the rules.

Live in EVERY moment,

love strong in tight embrace.

Paint your memories in colors

time won’t soon erase.

Life is right here, right now;

it is everything we do.

If you wait to live your life,

life may not wait for you.
