Holiday Fitness Strategy

The holidays are here again. For many, this means friends, family and our favorite foods.  The daily structure of our exercise and nutrition programs are jeopardized by the frenzied pace of activity during this season.

Maintaining your exercise and healthy eating habits can be difficult. Outside commitments at this time of year often interfere with scheduling workouts. Food seems to be everywhere. Missing workouts and overeating can be discouraging. You might even feel like you are failing in your effort to become fit and healthy.

Don’t worry. Here are some suggestions to help you maintain your sanity and your exercise and nutrition program at this hectic time of year.

Be flexible with your exercise schedule. Try to maintain instead of gain this holiday season. Don’t fret over a missed workout. Remember that success depends on consistency over a long period of time. Missing one or two workouts during the holidays will not ruin your efforts at maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Shorten your workouts to fit your time constraints. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Meet with a trainer to discuss ways to make your workouts more efficient during the holiday season.

Plan to cheat. A big fear of many members is gaining weight at this time of year. Allow yourself some time to cheat on your nutrition program. When we deny ourselves, we often overcompensate by binge eating. By giving yourself permission to cheat, the pressure of being perfect is removed and you will probably eat less.

Work out with a friend. Many people find that scheduling workouts with a friend increases their commitment to exercise. Having someone depend on you is a strong motivator for coming to the club.

Join a class or program. The structure of attending a class at a set time helps you to set aside time for your exercise program. Programs like the HealthplexÒ Sports Club “Reindeer Games” are designed to help members exercise more frequently during the holidays with the help of other team members. Our new “Healthy Inspirations” Weight Management program can also help you keep off unwanted holiday pounds.

Finally, take some time for yourself.  Plan time to relax and enjoy the season. Rest in the whirlpool or schedule a massage or facial for yourself. The down time will help you get through the mad rush of holiday shoppers and endless parties. Enjoy the season.
