The Doctor is In: Taylor Introduces Hospitalist Program

In Brief

  • A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in acute care medicine and cares for patients in a hospital setting.
  • Taylor Hospital recently introduced a three-member hospitalist team that provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week care for patients at the facility.
  • The hospitalist team works with the patient’s primary care physician and any other specialists to plan and execute a comprehensive treatment regimen for each patient.

From the moment they’re admitted to the second they’re discharged, patients receiving care at Taylor Hospital have important allies in their fight against illness: a team of dedicated hospitalists who provide round-the-clock care during every inpatient stay.

A hospitalist, also known as an inpatient care specialist, is a hospital-based internal medicine physician who specializes in acute care medicine. At Taylor, each hospitalist is board-certified or board-eligible in internal medicine and is available to deliver in-hospital patient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Providing round-the-clock care allows the hospitalists to always be available to the patient and his or her family to discuss diagnosis and treatment, as well as any other concerns that arise during the hospitalization,” says Erik N. DeLue, M.D., medical director of the Taylor Hospitalist program. “Taylor Hospital is committed to providing excellent care, even at 3 a.m., which is often when our patients need us the most.”

During each patient’s hospital stay, the hospitalist works closely with primary care physicians and specialists to coordinate his or her care. The group is in constant communication with the patient’s primary care physician, and sends the primary care physician a complete admission history and summary of the patient’s treatment upon the patient’s discharge.

“Sending these detailed reports allows your health care to be seamlessly transitioned back to your regular physician,” DeLue says. “Your doctor can immediately resume where he or she left off prior to your need for hospitalization.”

Currently, 24-hour care is provided by three members of the Hospitalist team: DeLue, Maksymilion Kawalec, M.D., and Mihai V. Diamandi, M.D. The team will expand to five members as of July 1, when Kleve Sinor, M.D., and Nadeem Anis, M.D., join the program.
