Alan Swimmer was looking for a way to give back to his community. And one organization offered just the way to do it.
“Over the years, I’ve been active in a number of nonprofit and charitable organizations,” says Mr. Swimmer, now a member of the Health Services Board of Crozer-Keystone Health System. “At one point, I decided to choose one for my primary interest and activity. Crozer-Keystone fit the bill for me. The organization was most worthwhile, as it served the greater community in so many ways. When I was asked to join the board, I was honored and said yes without hesitation.”
More than 25 years later, Mr. Swimmer remains heavily involved with Crozer-Chester Medical Center and its parent corporation, Crozer-Keystone Health System. He served as a member of Crozer’s Board of Directors for more than 10 years, and joined the Health Services Board, of which he has been a member for 16 years, when Crozer joined Delaware County Memorial Hospital to form Crozer-Keystone.
Mr. Swimmer is also a member of the board of the Crozer-Chester Foundation and served as chair of Crozer’s Joint Policy committee for many years.
“In my travels throughout the health system, I’ve had a chance to see what a successful operation it is, as well as the specific reasons why,” Mr. Swimmer says. “Aside from our clinical excellence, we are very supportive of our departments. If there are any staff shortages, we immediately search for and find good people to fill those positions. In addition, we don’t have any of the politics or infighting that other companies seem to experience. All of the parts of the operation, from administration to medical and dental staff to support staff to the Boards, work in concert with one goal in mind: to provide excellent service to our community.
“Having used the facilities a few times, I’ve gotten to know people providing care to our patients,” he says. “Both during a recent knee replacement and a trip to the Emergency Department, I realized that if this is what a person can expect when he or she comes through the door, then this is the place to be.”
A retired businessman who was born and raised in Chester, Pa., Mr. Swimmer serves as a consultant for Adjusters International of Rockville, Md. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and served in the U.S. military. In his spare time, Mr. Swimmer enjoys spending time with his two children and two grandchildren.
