The ChesPenn After-School Wellness Program held its 2nd Annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony on May 22 at Community Hospital.
The ChesPenn After-School Wellness Program was created through a partnership between physicians and staff of ChesPenn Health Services, the Healthplexâ Sports Club and the Penn State Cooperative Extension. The program provides exercise, nutrition counseling and homework assistance to children struggling with their weight. The program was launched in September 2004 by ChesPenn physician Rehkha Yagnik, M.D., and Program Coordinator Iesha White when they noticed a growth in the number of overweight children in the community. Currently, the ChesPenn After-School Wellness Program is only open to children who are ChesPenn Health Services patients. The children are also mentored on a daily basis by Peer Leaders from the Crozer-Keystone Wellness Center.
At the ceremony, children within the program received specially designed T-shirts and were acknowledged for successfully completing their designed program. Not only were children rewarded, but outstanding persons who helped and assisted the ChesPenn After-School Wellness Program were recognized as well.
