The road to medicine has not been without curves. I was born in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1967. No one in my family had been a physician nor was even in health care. I always had an interest in science and received my B.S. in biochemistry from Florida State University in 1990. I worked for three years doing drug research and decided to attend medical school in hopes of furthering my career in research. During my fourth year of medical school at The University of South Florida I had a rotation in primary care sports medicine and realized what I wanted to do with my life. I found the model of treating everyone as an athlete was very powerful.
I searched for a residency with a sports medicine fellowship which took me to Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. I stayed on to do a sports medicine fellowship which included a faculty development fellowship. As a senior resident and fellow, I was given many opportunities to teach and realized how much I enjoyed it. During my fellowship I met Brian Shiple, D.O. the director of sports medicine at Crozer-Keystone Family Practice Residency Program at several sports events and conferences. My wife and I wanted to get back to eastern Pennsylvania so when he offered me the assistant director’s position we were very excited. I am the team physician for Ridley high school, assistant medical director for the Keystone State Games and will provide coverage for the Summer X Games in Philly this year. I am new to the residency and fellowship, but it did not take long to feel the enthusiasm for teaching here.
Our first child was born two years ago, her name is Elise. We’re expecting our second child in November and we are very excited once again. In between family time and time spent on the sidelines I enjoy mountain biking and working on our house. In general I am not much of a spectator but Florida State football is a big exception. GO NOLES!!!
