Ultrasound imaging, also referred to as sonography, is based on the same principles involved in the sonar used on submarines. Ultrasound “sees” inside the human body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. The sound waves go into the patient’s body and bounce off the area to be studied, creating a picture on a TV monitor. These images are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image.
No radiation is involved in ultrasound imaging. In general, ultrasound is performed on the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, uterus, ovaries and on women who are pregnant to evaluate the baby to ensure that the baby is growing properly.
The tests are non-invasive. The patient is asked to lie on an examination table. A technologist places a wet gel-like substance on the patient’s skin, then moves a microphone-type device along the patient’s skin to look at various organs within the body. |
