School of Diagnostic Ultrasound

Who Are We?

Crozer-Chester Medical Center, a 422-bed suburban non-profit teaching hospital, is located in Upland, PA, between Philadelphia and Wilmington, DE. Crozer is a level II trauma center, regional burn center and regional cancer center. In addition to its intern and residency programs, Crozer sponsors several allied health schools. One of the oldest, in existence since 1948, is the School of Radiologic Technology. Crozer instituted The School of Diagnostic Ultrasound in September 1999. To date, over forty percent of its graduates have been hired to work within the Crozer-Keystone Health System.

What Is Ultrasound and The Sonographer's Role?

Ultrasound is an imaging modality, which uses high frequency sound waves to produce images for diagnosis. Ultrasound can be used for diagnosis in obstetrics, gynecology, general abdomen, breast, vascular, interventional, intraoperative, opthalmic, and cardiology, just to name a few.

The profession requires good judgment and the ability to provide appropriate health care services. Sonographers are highly skilled professionals. They provide the physician with the appropriate history, anatomic, pathologic and/or physiologic data to make a correct diagnosis. The sonographer may be the only professional in direct contact with a patient during their visit, so their behavior should be very professional. They must be able to work independently and exercise discretion in the performance of non-invasive and invasive diagnostic services.

A thorough understanding of physics, anatomy, cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and pathology, is pertinent to the development of a competent sonographer. Sonographers need to demonstrate very good communication skills with patients and colleagues. Competency is demonstrated by the administration of National Registry Exams.
