E-mail: dorothy.loving@crozer.org
The Congregational Nursing Initiative at Delaware County Memorial Hospital engages RNs as volunteers to lead and implement health and wellness programming within their religious communities. This inter-denominational program has been in existence for several years and continues to grow. Many congregations are implementing this program, and the level of interest in the program each year from additional local religious congregations has convinced us of its value. Our role has been to provide sufficient support and nurture, in the form of training and resources, to each participating congregation as the program continues to expand.
Cultural Connections Collaborative
Contact: Valerie Voluntad, Director
Phone: 610-284-8373 E-mail: valerie.voluntad@crozer.org
This program initiative includes cultural diversity education and training in every hospital department, multilingual signage and directories, interpreters with hours in specialists' practices, and affirmative action in hiring professional positions. Outreach activities include:
• Collaborative efforts with Upper Darby High School for an intergenerational "English as a Second Language" program.
• A forum for the community's social service and law enforcement agencies, to acquaint the groups with the services and to educate them on the various ethnic groups new to the area.
• Quarterly Multicultural Advisory Committee meetings with representatives from the respective communities.
The Cultural Connections Collaborative program also provides competency training to high school principals, school nurses, social workers, counselors and secretarial staff in the Upper Darby School District to help them deal more effectively with health, mental health and social issues that hinder recently immigrated children's success in school and affect overall well being. In addition to designing and coordinating the training components, the program staff facilitates access to health care and health resources on a one-to-one basis, and organizes parent education workshops for families of the District's immigrant children. This is done with interpreters present to facilitate accurate communication. Translated printed educational materials are also produced for parents in multiple languages.
The schools targeted for the development of school-based teams to help newcomers succeed in an academic setting include:
• Beverly Hills Middle School
• Bywood Elementary School
• Highland Park Elementary School
• Stonehurst Elementary School
• Upper Darby High School

Delaware Regional Cancer Center offers superior cancer care right here in our community. We've built our cancer care program on a strong foundation: our membership in the prestigious Fox Chase Cancer Center network of hospitals. This gives our patients access to clinical trials sponsored by Fox Chase as well as other regional and national organizations. Since 1991, more than 250 patients have participated in research involving cancer prevention, cancer treatment, symptom management and genetic counseling. On this solid foundation, we have built a program that focuses on one major goal: to offer state-of-the-art facilities and services for our cancer patients and their families. As a result, we have made continuous improvements in our facilities, expanded our capabilities and technology, and selected physicians, therapists, nursing and technical professionals to complement and strengthen our program. Our outstanding teams of physicians, surgeons, pathologists and radiologists remain on the forefront of cancer care, exploring and implementing the latest technology to enhance each patient's treatment plan.
