Asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalizations in children under the age of 15 and is one of the most common chronic illnesses in children. Being aware of common triggers for asthma to reduce effects and need for medication is important.

Common triggers for asthma attacks include: exercise; exposure to cold air; sudden temperature changes; allergic reactions to pollen, mold, dust, or pet dander; excitement and stress; and cigarette smoke. It is estimated that asthma worsens in 500,000 children who are exposed to second hand smoke. When asthma is properly managed, such as avoiding triggers, taking prescribed medications, monitoring for warning signs, and knowing what to do during an asthma attack, most children affected by the chronic illness can lead normal, healthy and active lives.

Additional Information/Follow Up

During the summer, The Healthplex® Sports Club in Springfield offers a special one-week camp for children with asthma that teaches campers how to engage in physical activities while maintaining their asthma symptoms. In conjunction with the American Lung Association, the camp is designed to target children ages 8-11 and 12-15.
