The pelvic floor is the system of ligaments, connective tissue and muscles that supports the organs of the pelvis - the uterus, bladder and rectum. Pelvic floor disorders describe changes in the position or function of these organs. These problems may occur from changes associated childbirth, aging or medical illness.
Pelvic floor disorders, which include vaginal prolapse (falling or bulging) and urinary incontinence (leaking urine), affect close to 50 percent of women at some point in their lifetime. These disorders can affect women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. A woman’s quality of life suffers when these conditions interfere with her lifestyle and/or affect her relationships with others. It is now recognized that these disorders may begin to appear during a woman's childbearing years.
Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders Program offers complete diagnostic evaluation for problems related to the vagina, uterus, bladder and urethra. Under the direction of Jose Maceda, M.D., the most advanced technologies and a variety of treatments ranging from physical therapy to surgery assure comprehensive and integrated care for pelvic floor disorders.
