Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy uses the principles of ultrasound to guide the radiologist to an area of abnormality that has previously been identified on ultrasound. This procedure is generally performed when an area of abnormality is not felt by the physician, but can be seen on ultrasound. The radiologist will consult with the patient’s physician to determine if this biopsy method is best for the patient.
Patients that are considered candidates will come to the Woman’s Diagnostic Center. One of our trained ultrasound technologists greets the patient and explains the procedure. The radiologist takes pictures of the breast and determines the exact location of the area of abnormality. A needle is placed into the area and a sample of the breast tissue is removed and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
This is an outpatient procedure, which means that the patient can leave once the procedure is over. The patient is generally asked to refrain from doing any heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for a couple of days.
