Welcome to Gynecologic Oncology at Crozer-Keystone Health System
Gynecologic oncology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of pre-malignant and malignant conditions of the female reproductive system, including the cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina as well as gestational trophophobic disease, an unusual complication of pregnancy.
Gynecologic cancers are at times best treated by a physician who is specially trained in this area. At Delaware County Memorial Hospital, cancer specialists called gynecologic oncologists are available at the Delaware County Regional Cancer Center to treat women with diseases of the reproductive system.
What is a Gynecologic Oncologist?
A gynecologic oncologist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has had several years of additional training in all of the effective forms and treatment of gynecologic cancers as well as the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancer. A gynecologic oncologist can perform surgery, administer chemotherapy or recommend radiation therapy – or combine therapies – without fragmenting care among many physicians. In most cases, women receive a referral to a gynecologic oncologist from their gynecologist or primary care physician.
Regular Pelvic Exams Increase Early Detection, Reduce Risk
Early detection of gynecologic cancers -- cancers of the female reproductive system -- offers a woman the best chance of preventing cancer from developing and successfully treating this disease if it is diagnosed. That is why it is essential for a woman to have regular pelvic exams and Pap tests.
Pelvic Exam and Pap Test
The exam can be performed by a woman's primary care physician, specialist in internal medicine, or obstetrician/gynecologist (Ob/Gyn), or another trained health professional, such as a physician assistant, nurse midwife or nurse practitioner. During the pelvic exam, the physician will check the health of the reproductive organs and perform a Pap test -- collecting a sample of cells from the surface of the cervix at the lower end of the uterus -- for laboratory testing. This test offers a woman the best means of early detection.
Free Exams for Those in Need
The HealthyWoman project provides eligible low-income women with free breast and cervical cancer early detection services to reduce cancer risk and improve survival, especially among high-risk groups such as African Americans age 50+.
