New studies are underway at DCMH and across the country that may limit breast surgery to removal of only the first lymph node--the sentinel lymph node. The sentinel lymph node may indicate the likelihood of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Sentinel lymph node biopsy has been proven successful in the treatment of melanoma skin cancer. Preliminary results from national clinical trials with breast patients have produced exciting results, and the FDA may approve this procedure for breast cancer treatment. |
