Sports Medicine: Sports medicine involves comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients involved in sports or who want to start or maintain an active lifestyle. Sports medicine is similar in many ways to orthopedic surgery. It more often involves innovative new technology, especially arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder.
Thoracic Surgery: Thoracic surgery is that of the chest and lungs.
New studies are underway at DCMH and across the country that may limit breast surgery to removal of only the first lymph node--the sentinel lymph node. The sentinel lymph node may indicate the likelihood of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Sentinel lymph node biopsy has been proven successful in the treatment of melanoma skin cancer. Preliminary results from national clinical trials with breast patients have produced exciting results, and the FDA may approve this procedure for breast cancer treatment.
