Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is widely used to diagnose sports-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist. It is a radiation-free, usually non-invasive way to produce high-quality pictures inside the body from multiple planes. When our bodies are exposed to radio waves within a strong electro-magnetic field, we emit radiofrequency signals. MRI picks up these signals and converts them into three-dimensional tomographic images.
The patient lies on a table within a large circular tunnel. The patient is expected to lie completely still during the procedure and may have a contrast agent injected for some procedures. Patients with metallic clips, electronic implants, pacemakers or items may not be able to have an MRI. The patient will be asked a series of questions by the MRI scheduler to ensure that he/she is a candidate for MRI.
