Comprehensive Classes

The Center for Diabetes offers comprehensive classes to help patients understand diabetes. The health care team works with you to teach them how to balance their care and provides a clear understanding of:

  • What causes diabetes
  • What factors put you at risk for diabetes
  • How to recognize and properly treat hypoglycemia
  • Eating healthy, including meal planning and carbohydrate counting
  • How various medications might affect blood glucose control
  • Benefits of exercise
  • When you should test your urine for ketones
  • How diabetes affects the heart, eyes and kidneys
  • Importance of being an active member in the health care team.

A series of morning, afternoon and evening classes are scheduled to meet your needs.

 

Helping You Manage Your Condition

 

The following classes are offered to help you manage your condition:

  • Basic diabetes education
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Insulin administration
  • Management skills for diabetes related to pregnancy
  • Intensive Management Program
  • Insulin pump training
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS)
  • Pre-diabetes

Free Classes, Support Groups

 

The Center for Diabetes also offers free classes and support groups that give you the opportunity to share and learn from each other. Topics covered during these meetings include:

  • Coping skills
  • Resources for a person with diabetes
  • Foot and eye care related to diabetes
  • The importance of good blood sugar control
  • Healthy meal planning

Insurance Information

 

As an American Diabetes Association (ADA) recognized hospital-based outpatient diabetes education program, the Center for Diabetes accepts most major insurance plans. Many class registration fees are also covered by insurance.
