Is it an Emergency?
How do you tell the difference between a true emergency and a minor problem? Certain symptoms are so alarming that the need for emergency care, or even an ambulance, is obvious. But what should you do about more common illnesses and injuries? Only a doctor can diagnose medical problems. But you can protect your family's health by learning to recognize certain symptoms.
The following are warning signs of medical emergencies:
• Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
• Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure
• Fainting
• Sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision
• Change in mental status (such as unusual behavior, confusion, difficulty waking)
• Sudden, severe pain anywhere in the body
• Bleeding that won't stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Coughing up or vomiting blood
Don't Delay
If you, or someone you know is sick or badly injured and requires emergency medical assistance, dial 911. Be sure to speak clearly and calmly. Give your name, address, phone number and location of the injured person. Describe the problem, and don't hang up until the dispatcher tells you to.
Seek Care & Trust Your Instincts
If you are alarmed by unusually severe symptoms that could be an emergency, it's best to seek care.
When to Call an Ambulance
Taylor Emergency Medical Services is available to provide advanced life support to you and your family 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Paramedics and emergency medical technicians are trained to begin medical treatment on the way to the hospital. The ambulance can also alert the emergency department to the patient's condition in advance.
Call an ambulance instead of driving to the emergency department for the following:
• Is the victim's condition life-threatening?
• Could the victim's condition worsen and become life-threatening on the way to the hospital?
• Could moving the victim cause further injury?
• Does the victim need the skills or equipment of paramedics or emergency medical technicians?
• Would distance or traffic conditions cause a delay in getting the victim to the hospital?
Not Every Cut Needs Stitches
Not every cut needs stitches. Nor does every bump and bruise require advanced medical treatment, but it is always best to err on the side of caution. If you feel you are involved in an emergency, come to the Taylor Hospital Emergency Department or call your family physician. If the emergency is life-threatening call 911.
