Candidates eligible for the Radiography program must demonstrate the skills needed for the successful completion of both the program and subsequent employment as a radiographer. Technical standards are the physical demands and the sensory and mental requirements necessary for a healthcare professional working in the Radiology field. These standards are a requirement of our governing body, the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, (JRCERT) and are as follows:
Physical Requirements:
- must be able to frequently lift/push/pull objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds; includes moving patients in wheelchairs and stretchers for diagnostic procedures
- must be able to perform manipulative skills such as positioning patients and equipment; changing spot films and manipulating x-ray tube and table
- must be able to perform considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching; frequently reaching for supplies and equipment
- must be freely able to move about an imaging room as well as manipulation of machinery in other areas of the hospital, such as OR and patient rooms
Sensory Requirements:
- must be able to assess patient condition by asking questions and noting responses, observing condition and behavior; capable of visually evaluating film quality for variations in technical standards
- must possess a visual acuity of 20/60 in at least one eye (with or without correction); accurate color perception
Mental Requirements: (assessed through passed academic performance)
- must be able to concentrate for extended periods, (test-taking, long procedures)
- must be able to learn, understand, and apply theoretical concepts underlying the practice of radiologic technology
