Q: What is a Transitional (TY) Residency
A: A transitional residency is a flexible broad-based clinical year designed to meet the needs of a variety of individuals. The residency is one year in duration, during which a resident will devote the majority of time to disciplines which develop fundamental clinical skills, e.g. internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and pediatrics. The remaining weeks are generally spent in emergency medicine, an ambulatory training experience, and electives.
Q: Who should look at a TY residency?
A: Anyone desiring a broad-based clinical experience before completing a categorical residency in another field. Many subspecialty residencies require this training before entering the subspecialty itself (ophthalmology, radiology, neurology, and anesthesiology, to name a few). Individuals who are undecided about their ultimate career find the TY residency helpful in making a choice because they will gain exposure to multiple disciplines. Lastly, anyone who desires additional clinical training before going on in any field would find the TY residency beneficial.
Q: How many residents does Crozer's Transitional Year Residency accept?
A: Currently we accept 14 per year.
Q: Does the program offer electives?
A: Yes. There are four blocks of electives, each four weeks long.
Q: Is there a night-float service?
A: Yes. One R-1 resident relieves the 2 on call Interns from 9:00 pm - 7:30 am.
Q: How demanding is the call schedule?
A: First-year residents are assigned call every fourth-fifth night during floor, and Critical Care from 4:30 pm-9:00 pm when the night float intern takes over. No call is assigned during electives or the Emergency Medicine/Night Float rotations. In addition, the program requires that there be 24 "duty-free" hours every seven days.
