Treatment Methods

Crozer-Chester Medical Center's Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders Program provides

patient care in a compassionate and understanding manner. Our goal is to develop a customized treatment plan based on each individual’s symptoms and conditions. The practice emphasizes patient education regarding pelvic floor problems and therapeutic options so that patients can participate in their health care choices.

Therapies for pelvic floor conditions may include:

  • Behavior modification
  • Pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation through exercises and/or biofeedback  (described below in more detail)
  • Medications
  • Sacral neuromodulation (Interstim)
  • Injections of urethral bulking agents
  • Vaginal inserts (pessaries)
  • Surgery (vaginal, abdominal and laparoscopic)

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

The pelvic floor muscles provide support for the pelvic organs and play an integral part in their proper functioning.  Injury to these important muscles may result in abnormal bladder or bowel function, including the inability to hold or empty the bladder or bowel, pain with intercourse; and a “fallen” or prolapsed bladder, bowels or uterus.  After evaluating a patient, the physician may determine that pelvic floor rehabilitation is an important part of the treatment plan.

Individuals with specialized knowledge of the female pelvic floor develop a care plan to address each patient’s needs.  The patient’s treatment program is reviewed by the physician and the duration of therapy is determined by each patient’s progress and potential for future improvement.  While not indicated for every patient, pelvic floor rehabilitation can help many women regain control and enjoy a better quality of life.

This specialized care is currently provided at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and the Springfield Healthplex.
